Years ago, I used to think that it didn’t matter what sneakers I wore—after all, they were just, well, sneakers. It wasn’t until I started to exercise more that I paid attention to how they feel and support me as I walk, run, or train. The right shoes make the world of a difference in impact and recovery, and I love seeing brands continue to progress on their designs and technology.

That’s why when I heard about Brooks' new launch theGhost Max, I knew I needed to try them. It was supposed to be the brand’s most supportive, cushioned shoe yet, so I was curious about whether or not they’d live up to Brooks' coveted reputation for lightweight, supportive shoes (especially compared tomy well-loved Ghost 14’s, since these are an addition to the line).

The brand sent me samples to try just over two weeks ago. I immediately opened them up, poppedthe all-black pairon, and used them for my workout that day. My initial thought once I pulled them out of the box was just how thick the sole cushion was—they’re at least 1-inch all around, with slightly more DNA Loft v2 foam cushion at the heel and a thinner half-inch cushion at the toe. These are surely the thickest sole I’ve seen from the brand yet, but they taper off very smoothly towards the front so I haven’t felt off balance when I wear them. This is one difference from the Ghost 15, where the offset is a little bit higher. I will say, because of their sole thickness and tapered shape, they’re not the perfect shoe for training, especially if you’re using heavy weights, since they can roll. So you’ll want to keep that in mind.

For walking and running however, the cushioned sole, makes every step more comfortable because of its ability to soften the blow of even the hardest ground-to-pavement steps. In fact, included within the sole is a GlideRoll Rocker, a gel insert within the sole, that helps your foot glide more smoothly and sort of push you forward, which I have felt with every workout. Despite their thickness, these shoes are in no way clunky or heavy, a detail that has completely won me over.

I typically exercise four to five times a week, mixing indoor and outdoor walking and running. These felt great no matter how I was walking or running or where I was doing it. They’re lightweight and feel like they’re boosting my steps completely. Other great perks are the super breathable mesh upper, the sturdy laces, and the cushioned inner heel, which provides comfort and stability.

The cushion is maximum, and the support is neutral—meaning they’re perfect for folks that don’t need any extra support with their stride, but want a thicker, plush sole to respond to steps. I am that person. I don’t struggle with my balance, gait or pronation, and I find cushioned shoes help my body feel better both during and after movement.

These shoes are available in a variety of sizes, from 6 to 12 for women’s sizing, and 7 to 15 for men’s sizing. Both come in medium, wide, or extra wide width. I wear the all black color, but they come in other shades likethis tan like colorwayorthis pinkone.

Because the brand sent me two pairs, I gave one away to my sister, who’s a physical therapist and on her feet at least eight to ten hours everyday with patients. She texted me a few days after wearing these shoes, absolutely raving about them, saying, “These are the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn.” As an avid sneaker fan, getting that praise from her only further solidified my thoughts for this shoe.

These sneakers will be something I repurchase again and again, and I’m confident in that.Grab a pair for yourself, right now.
