Best Overall GlassPyrex Simply Store Glass Food Storage Container SetPHOTO: Amazon$38 at Amazon$45 at Target$10 at WalmartWhat we like:This set offers a wide range of storage capacities in microwave-, oven-, dishwasher- and freezer-safe glass vessels for the utmost in utility. What to know:The lids are made of BPA-free plastic and are top-rack dishwasher-safe only. It’s no surprise that the winner for best glass container comes from Pyrex, a brand that has long been associated with quality glass cookware. While the newer generations of containers, like this set, are made from tempered glass rather than the borosilicate Pyrex of ages past, they still retain much of their renowned versatility, going where other containers don’t dare—across the span of temperature ranges from the heat of the microwave to the chill of the fridge and freezer, though we do recommend taking temperature changes gradually with these. This set comes with nine containers and accompanying lids, storing as little as 1-cup servings and up to 7 cups at a time. The set is semi-nestable, with different shapes of containers and lids that stack together nicely. While the vessels in this set are glass, the lids are made from a BPA-free plastic which allows for a truly airtight and watertight seal. We found that this really extended the quality of food in the fridge and kept freezer burn off of frozen items. We think this set is ideal for storing leftovers that need to be reheated in the microwave, and we love that we can use these glass containers for freezer storage, as well. Overall, if you’re looking for a glass container storage set that will keep your snap peas snapping and help leftovers get back to center stage, this is our pick.Capacity:7 cups, 6 cups, 4 cups, 3 cups, 2 cups, 1 cup |Pieces Included:18 |Materials:Glass, plastic |Dishwasher Safe:YesPHOTO: EatingWell / Ashley SchaubroeckPHOTO: EatingWell / Ashley SchaubroeckPHOTO: EatingWell / Ashley Schaubroeck

Best Reusable BagsStasher 4-Pack Lunch/Travel Storage BagsPHOTO: Amazon$46 at AmazonWhat we like:The silicone material makes these durable and airtight while still maintaining some flexibility for tight fits in lunch boxes or a crowded freezer. What to know:There may be some challenges with cleaning and drying these bags—particularly the seals. When it comes to food storage bags, it may be easy to go the disposable route. But if you’re looking for a more eco-friendly,reusable option, these Stasher bags are an incredibly versatile alternative to single-use plastic bags.Alongtime editor favorite, these bags are made of reusable silicone, which matches plastic’s ability to store food with an airtight seal but far outpaces it as a cooking medium. These bags will just as easily store your sandwich for a few hours for lunch as they will keep foods fresh for months in the freezer. They even allow you to cook foods like vegetables or salmon in the oven or in boiling water, sous vide-style.This particular Stasher set includes two 12-ounce snack bags and two 28-ounce sandwich bags. However, the brand has multiple “bundles” of bags in various sizes, including thisReusable Storage Starter Setthat we also tested. In addition to one snack bag and one sandwich bag, the Starter Set includes a half-gallon bag and a 28-ounce stand-up bag. While we ultimately preferred the Lunch/Travel Bundle just a tad more, we still think the Starter Set makes a solid pick. When we tested these Stasher bags, we were impressed with their resistance to staining and odors, and they did an excellent job keeping our foods fresh and leak-free. However, we did find them a bit challenging to clean and dry, especially the seal itself. Overall, though, we think these Stasher bags are a major utility player for both storage and cooking, and the cleaning issues are well worth the added effort in exchange for the functionality of the product.Capacity:12 fl. oz., 28 fl. oz. |Pieces Included:4 |Materials:Silicone, plastic |Dishwasher Safe:YesPHOTO: EatingWell / Kathryn StandingPHOTO: EatingWell / Kathryn StandingPHOTO: EatingWell / Kathryn Standing

Best for Freezer StorageGlasslock Assorted Oven Safe Container SetPHOTO: Amazon$55 at Amazon$60 at Target$100 at WayfairWhat we like:These containers from Glasslock can take the heat from your microwave, dishwasher and oven while keeping your leftovers safe from freezer burn. What to know:The lids aren’t as hardy, so keep them out of the oven and microwave. After testing dozens of glass food storage containers, this set quickly became a favorite. Not only can these Glasslock containers go straight from the freezer to the microwave, oven or dishwasher, but they also stand out for how well they handled the wear and tear of everyday life. The latch tabs create an airtight seal that kept our leftovers fresh, and after multiple uses, we noticed no stubborn food stains or lingering odors—something we can’t say for all the sets we tested. This BPA-free set includes a variety of container sizes, from a 6.3-cup rectangle for batch-cooked meals to a 0.7-cup round container for sauces and snacks, plus just about everything in between. While the glass containers handle the heat of the oven and microwave beautifully, we appreciated that the lids, made of sturdy polypropylene, are easy to snap on and off (they also helped this set stand outin other tests). Just be sure to keep them out of the microwave and oven—the heat will warp or melt them.We especially loved this set for freezing and reheating soups and stews. Even after days in the freezer, our butternut squash soup tasted as fresh and flavorful as the day it was made, with no freezer burn or off flavors. And as a bonus, these sleek, sturdy containers are attractive enough to double as serving pieces in a pinch—perfect for when you’re hosting and short on bowls. This Zoku set not only makes it easy for your containers to take up less vital kitchen real estate, but it also has interchangeable lids for several of the containers, leaving you with more options for the right fit. The set comes with containers in 1.5-cup, 3-cup, 4-cup and 5-cup sizes, along with a reusable ice pack that nests under the lid or fits neatly on top.We were thoroughly impressed with this set during our testing, and we not only loved its space-saving construction but also its range of sizes, which worked well for storing everything from leftovers and meal prep to lunches—although the larger containers may be too large for a child’s lunch box. Additionally, we found that these did, in fact, have a leak proof seal, and although we had one faulty lid, a quick interaction with customer service resulted in a replacement, which ultimately enhanced our confidence in the product long-term.Capacity:5 cups, 4 cups, 3 cups, 1.5 cups |Pieces Included:11 |Materials:Plastic |Dishwasher Safe:YesPHOTO: EatingWell / Rachel AbrahamPHOTO: EatingWell / Rachel AbrahamPHOTO: EatingWell / Rachel Abraham

The Bottom Line: The Best Food Storage Containers
ThePyrex Simply Store Glass Food Storage Container Set(view at Amazon) made the top of our picks as the best overall glass set, not only for its versatility across kitchen uses but also for its variety of shapes and sizes. It’s a perfect choice for those who prefer glass to other materials but want the flexibility that some plastic sets offer. On the flip side, if you do prefer plastic, we can’t say enough good things about theRubbermaid Brilliance Leak-Proof Food Storage Containers(view at Amazon). These containers have the benefits of lighter weight and the durability of plastic but give more of a glass “look,” and they’re super resistant to staining, ensuring they stay clear and, well, brilliant. Both of these sets also deliver great value at a mid-range price point.
Seeking the right food storage container for your needs starts with understanding how you’ll use it. These are a few points to keep in mind when making your selections:
Look at the Design
Those who want to cook and store larger quantities of food may want to opt for a set that includes large-capacity containers, while those who are mostly storing individual meals might want a set that includes a sizable quantity of smaller containers. Shape can also come into play, as those packing a full bag may want a smaller, flexible container while others may be fine with some bulk but want multiple interior compartments.
Pick the Right Materials
Most containers fall into either the plastic or glass camp, with some newer additions made from ceramic and silicone. While we do loveplastic containersfor their light weight and functionality, health care consultant and farm bill educatorChristina Badaracco, MPH, RDN, LDN, notes thatglass containersare an ideal option from a food safety standpoint. “Glass food storage containers tend to be safest because they won’t degrade and leach chemicals into food over time,” she says. “Ceramic and stainless steel bowls (with lids) can also work for storing leftovers.”
“Keep in mind that composition of food packaging and storage containers—as well as our knowledge about health outcomes from the components—are changing over time,” Badaracco adds, “So it’s important to seek information from reputable sources about what materials are safe and for what applications.”
Consider the Durability
Most food storage containers are designed to take a beating, and each material has its own strengths and weaknesses. Glass and ceramic may withstand years of use more effectively, but they can chip or shatter if tossed around. Meanwhile, plastics can degrade and may not last for years on end, but they might be less susceptible to destruction with everyday use.
Is It Easy to Clean?
If you’re not into high-demand cleaning, we do recommend looking for options that are dishwasher safe and that do not have a removable gasket or seal that’s tricky to clean. In our experience, cleaning those types of containers has been a point of frustration during our testing, sometimes requiring disassembling and reassembling with each use.
Is It a Good Value for the Price?
Price points can vary widely on sets of containers, with some of our favorite sets coming in under $20 and others above $200. When it comes to value for the price, consider the materials you’re getting, as well as how many containers and the range of sizes to get the best bang for your buck.
Our Food Storage Container Tests
We conducted rigorous research on over 50 different food storage containers in order to provide you with the most functional, durable and eye-catching options around. We put each set through a battery of tests to determine if they enhance the longevity of foods and their freshness, how well they hold up to leakage, staining or odors, and generally how functional they are for different lifestyle considerations. We filled our containers with foods like onions, tomato sauce and beets to gauge their odor and stain resistance, and we filled them with water and shook them to see how much leakage was present. We also weighed in on the durability and value of each set, as well as how easy they are to clean.

Bayco Glass Food Storage Container Set($40 at Amazon):Although we love these borosilicate glass containers for their ability to withstand heat, the material does make them more prone to chipping. If you’ve got the space or the patience to store these with a little extra care, they’re a great choice.
OXO Good Grips Smart Seal Plastic Container Set($43 at Amazon):This set felt like a good value for the price point, but we would have liked the lids to come off a bit easier, as it was challenging to open some of the containers.
Joseph Joseph Nest Lock Plastic Food Storage Container Set($30 at Amazon):We love how nestable these food storage containers are, and we especially love their leak-proof locking lids. However, since the containers are all different sizes, we don’t think this is the best choice for folks looking to evenly portion out their food for the week.
Xomoo Reusable Food Container Silicone Bags, 6-Piece Set($20 at Amazon):One advantage of this set of silicone containers is that they are freestanding; however, we noticed they were a bit more prone to retaining color from foods stored in them.
Are reusable food storage containers safe to use?
According toTamika Sims, PhD, senior director of technology communications at the International Food Information Council (IFIC), “All food packaging is designed to be able to hold food to keep it from spoiling and safe.”
“However,” Sims adds, “it is important to use and treat packaging as it was designed to be used. This means you should not microwave, reuse, wash in a dishwasher or store in a freezer packaging that was not designed to keep its integrity under certain circumstances, such as high heat or extreme cold.”
How many times can you reuse a food storage container?
This really comes down to the individual container itself and the materials it’s made of. Looking at any manufacturer’s warranty information may be a good indicator of how long a product should hold up. Some products are not designed for multi-year use, while others can be reused for years to come.
What’s the best way to clean a reusable food storage container?
Are food storage containers microwave- and oven-safe?
Most food storage containers on our list are safe for use in the microwave—though the lids may not be—and a few can also withstand oven temperatures. Usually, glass- and ceramic-based containers are more likely to stand up to the oven, and silicone can also be used in boiling water forsous vide-style cooking. Be sure to check your product packaging and always take temperature transitions slowly, as glass can sometimes shatter when going from hot to cold temperatures too quickly.
What are the best containers to use in the freezer?
Any container that’s approved for use in the freezer should be safe to use, meaning its chemical and physical structure should be able to withstand low temperatures. Always look for the wordsfreezer-safeon the container so you know it’s okay to use in those conditions.
