What the Study Found
After drawing from a pool of 6,158 research articles and reviewing 13 observational studies, the researchers found a compelling connection betweendiet qualityand the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 in adult populations. Among the dietary patterns analyzed, the Mediterranean Diet—rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins andhealthy fatslike olive oil—demonstrated significant immunity-supporting properties. Those adhering to the Mediterranean diet exhibited a 77% lower risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes.
Similarly, the DASH Diet—a way of eating originally designed to help lower blood pressure andreduce sodium intake—contributed to a 67% reduction in the risk of severe COVID-19. Additionally, the researchers concluded that the plant-based diet, known for its reliance on whole foods derived from plants, was inversely associated with COVID-19 risk and severity.
Interestingly, the review also uncovered the underlying mechanisms through which these diets offer their immune-supporting benefits. Researchers observed enhanced immune cell activity, lowered levels ofchronic inflammationand improved overall immune function among individuals adhering to these diets. These diets emphasize whole foods rich inantioxidants, vitamins and minerals that supply the body with essential tools to combat viral infections. This holistic approach to immune support highlights the importance of dietary choices in preventing COVID-19 and enhancing the body’s resilience to disease.
