Her career in food began shortly after a nine-month backpacking adventure from East Africa to South Africa, where she noticed that top-quality produce grown in South Africa wasn’t readily available at local grocery stores because it was exported. This led her to learn more about our local food systems through farmers' markets, CSAs, gardening and the complex web of the global food system.As a farmers' market manager, Lauren worked directly with farmers and gained insight into the complexities and challenges farmers face. She also worked as a garden educator and program manager for K-12 for underprivileged youth, where she taught garden education, nurtured curiosity about our natural environment and encouraged kids and teens to taste new foods.Lauren also worked as a cheese intern at the San Francisco Cheese School, where she prepared cheese platters and cheese plating, set up classes and assisted cheese experts.
